A very hot Thursday in July saw a team of runners from RAF High Wycombe travel to RAF Wittering for the Road Relay Championships.
Runners each complete a 5km run, across a very fast flat course in the vicinity of the RAF Wittering airfield. The ladies team got off to an excellent start, Fg Off Bagshaw ran the first leg – running the fastest time of the day, and breaking the course record in 18:20:00. Second to run was Flt Lt Littlefield in 22:46:00, the fifth fastest time of the day, followed by Sgt Wilson in 28:48:00. The High Wycombe ladies were being hotly pursued by RAF Scampton and RAF Brize Norton, who ultimately finished second and first respectively, beating the High Wycombe team into third place.
The men’s team were off to a strong start too with Flt Lt Harrap running a very respectable 21:05:00, followed by Cpl Dobson (23:46:00) and Sqn Ldr McRitchie (21:45:00). The final leg was valiantly run by Flt Lt Harrap (again) in a very strong 22:04:00 for the second time around, and now in the midday sun! This saw the men’s team finish in 21st place overall. The men’s team competition was won by RAF Waddington, and the individual winter was Cpl Bailey of RAF Coningsby with a blistering time of 16:20:00. Many thanks to the RAF Wittering running club for organising an excellent event, and even some free chocolate and flapjack at the end!
