RAF High Wycombe AFI Visit – 1 Jun 21

On 1 Jun 21, Air Officer Commanding Number 2 Group (AOC 2 Gp), Air Vice-Marshal Al Gillespie CBE MA BSc RAF carried out the Annual Formal Inspection of RAF High Wycombe. The Annual Formal Inspection is an opportunity for the Station to show off what they have achieved in the year and to show off the incredible personnel at RAF High Wycombe.

The Visit
During the visit, AOC 2 Gp was shown the works that had been undertaken by the amazing Station Support Squadron Team to improve the facilities in SLA. Of note was the recent Project HYDRO, improving the reliability of the hot water supply to accommodation massively. They also showed off some of the reworked kitchens in SLA and the large amount of work pencilled in the future to keep the improvements moving forwards.

Following this was a visit to the refurbished Church which has had a complete overhaul. Moving onwards to the Integrated Welfare Facility, AOC 2 Gp was shown the very efficient Unit Lateral Flow Testing System before being whisked into the E-Sports room.

Once inside, the AOC was shown the impressive kit they have collected and even had the chance to take part in a spot of VR gaming. Next was a walk-through tour of the facilities and the newly refurbished training rooms which have recently been completed. Last but not least was a chat with the HIVE ladies who discussed the massive support they provide to the local community.

After a socially distanced Working Lunch allowing the AOC to meet whole force personnel from across the station, a tour of the Harris Room and the Tunnels commenced.
Having been given a very interesting tour of the tunnels and how they used to operate, the AOC was led into the Harris Room for the famous picture behind the desk.

Next on the visit was the Ops Wg and C4i Team who presented their works on unit and demonstrated some the incredible work they have undertaken during this difficult time. One of these projects that got highlighted was their impressive ‘Skype in a Box’ kit which allows them broadcast live events from anywhere on unit. This was used to great effect at the next serial. Closing off an excellent day was an Honours & Awards ceremony which was presided over by AOC 2 Gp.
